Biography

Exploring gesture, colour and material at the source of Lied and mélodie, baritone Franck Lunion has for several years developed a body of work centred on the recital as a revelation of a living encounter between poetry and music.

His repertoire gives a prominent place to Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Mahler, Fauré, Duparc, Hahn, Mussorgsky and Shostakovich.

Important encounters with Anna Reynolds, Christa Ludwig, as well as with pianists Claude Lavoix, Jeff Cohen and Irina Kataeva, have deeply nourished his approach to singing and the recital repertoire.

Throughout his career, he has collaborated with artists such as Claudio Abbado, William Christie and Peter Brook, and has appeared in festivals and concert venues in France and abroad.

Among his recent recital programmes are Mussorgsky’s Songs and Dances of Death and Shostakovich’s Suite on Verses by Michelangelo Buonarroti, performed in Paris (Reid Hall) and Los Angeles, as well as Schumann’s Dichterliebe at the Schola Cantorum.

A special place is currently devoted to Schubert, and more particularly to Winterreise, approached through a close attention to musical continuity, the breathing of the text and a form of expressive sobriety.
